Well yes. It was a pretty miserable week, at least last week it was. Well remember last Monday’s post, how I said I was no longer sick? Turns out I still was. I didn’t actually start feeling better until this most recent Sunday… so yes. last week was quite miserable.
This week, although by far a better week than last, wasn’t the happiest I’ve seen either. Some personal matters made this week sort of a bit of a downer if you will.
The recent times haven’t been all that bad, however, in fact I’d say I profited some. Because of the lengthy stretch of days I was stressed out or bummed out, I’ve done a lot of praying, of course–because that’s what people do in hard times. Also, I’ve been looking forward to church a lot recently, because every time I went the message was always something I needed to hear. On Sunday, for instance, on the umpteenth day that I felt sick, the message was this: be faithful and patient; it’s only temporary. God didn’t forget about me. It was so weird, because my preacher had inadvertently told me exactly what I needed to hear! So as you can imagine, that put me in a great mood.
And just yesterday, I was feeling upset about something else that had happened, but after going to church I was filled with joy and piece, exactly what I’d been praying for.
Needless to say, mainly due to church, this week has definitely been on the up. It’s already almost Friday, and tomorrow will be a not-too-stressful B Day. And, with that sickness completely gone, I think life is returning to normal. What a blessing!
Moving on, you’ll notice I haven’t done the podcast. Here’s why: I tried to record it, heck I even saved the file and opened my feed to update, and that was when I realized that a good 35 minutes of the podcast were gone! Due to that recording trouble, I’ll wait until tomorrow to do the episode. But since it’s over Alter Aeon, a fantasy game that’s been around since before my time but is still being updated, you are going to enjoy it.
As for books, I’m not finished with the Ender Wiggin series yet, I’m only on book 3, in fact, which I just recently learned is over 500 pages long. I’m serious, this author doesn’t cease to amaze me. His level of creativity and amount of thought he puts into these books is astounding.
Looking at an introduction he wrote for this installment I’m reading, this book wasn’t even planned! Isn’t it weird that the only reason he went ahead and wrote this in the first place, was that the publisher he’d been working with had published the Ender Wiggin series as a 3 book series, rather than just 2 books, which it was originally supposed to be, but our clever author was still able to produce such a great 3rd book?
Aside from my rambling rants about my recent readings, the weather here has well and truly gone crazy on us. Last weekend was very cold, with temps in the lower 50s and upper 40s… and Monday it was in the lower 40s. Tuesday, however, it began to warm up–and kept that up for all of two days! By Wednesday, the high temperatures reached 60 degrees, but guess what the high was today? 37! To top it off, it is expected to be nearly 80 on Saturday!
As for rain, the last time we had that was Sunday, and I don’t know when we’ll get more. I’m thinking we could get some next Wednesday, but not too sure about that yet.

Weather News and Blog Updates

Steve here.
If you’ve read my about page, or home page, you probably know why my name is Severe Storm Steve–it’s because I was the meteorologist at my elementary school for 4 out of the 6 years I attended it. Well, if you’ve been dieing for me to play that role once again, here you go.
This weekend, a pacific storm system, combined with a dryline will cause some rather dangerous storms to form across North Texas. On Saturday afternoon and night, the storms will be focused mainly to the northwest of where I live. Sunday, however, these storms will move east and impact where I live, and they will likely be severe. Large hail, damaging winds, and tornadoes are all possible!
However, if storms end up coming our way Saturday night, the threat for severe weather will decrease on Sunday. Well I guess we’ll just have to see how this all plays out; I guess that’s a reason to look forward to my next post… huh?
Moving on, I recorded Episode 21 of the Steven D podcast, which actually turned out to be quite distructive. Starting off, for the interesting segment, I aired Playing With Explosives Episode 4 (Playing With Explosives being a minicast Danny and I are making, that has to do with rather funny and unfortunate dealings with some rather distructive explosives). In playing with explosives 2, I let Danny try out a nifty device called a Rocket Chair. When he sits in it and pulls the cord, both him and the chair fly sky high in a fireball, only to come crashing down with a loud and distructive bang. There is more… but you’ll have to listen to the episode to find out what it is.
Next, for the game of the day segment, I do “twisted egg hunt” for the last installment of the Swamping With Steve series. Ever gone easter egg hunting in a field of zombies?
Finally, the not so distructive part, I give you guys some helpful websites for my tech tip. So, what are you guys waiting for? Just go to the podcasts page to check it out, and subscribe to the podcast feed while you are there.
Besides the podcast news, I have a bit of a busy weekend coming up. It won’t be non stop like last weekend was, but none the less I have a few things planned.
On Saturday, my family is taking a trip down to Round Rock for some goal ball event. I’m not sure exactly what this event will consist of, so I guess it’ll come as a surprise to all of us.
Meanwhile, Sunday, we’re going to church… and I don’t think anything else is planned for the day… that is for me anyway. I guess mother nature will be quite busy on Sunday :). But on the bright side, I might get in some storm recordings… and if the storms are severe enough, they will likely be awesome recordings.
Changing topics, I’m quite glad that staar testing is over. Those tests are such pains in the butt–I sit in a room, taking a 60 to 65 question test, over some pretty hard subjects. Fortunately, I found out today that not only did I pass both reading and math tests, but got 6 As on my report card and 1 b+. Ironically, the b+ was in English class. But why? I’m an awesome writer! 🙂
Well folks, I guess that concludes tonight’s post. I should be back for another update either Saturday or Sunday, and if not then early next week.

I’m in a pretty awesome mood today–staar testing is all gone, I just had my coffee, and I get the privilege to write yet another blog post.
Well as the post title implies, I have a question for you readers–but no need to worry, it’s just a matter of filling out a small pole. So I was thinking… should I have a home page (an actual home page), or should the home page remain as it is, the blog entries.
Let me elaborate here. A home page, is what you’d see when first logging onto stevend.net. I was thinking about creating one of those, instead of showing blog entries on the home page as is being done currently. So, I’d kindly ask any and all readers of this post to fill out the pole below, and submit in your vote. In two weeks, (on April 16), I will decide based on the majority of votes whether or not to do a custom home page. So please vote, you have two weeks to do so.

Alright… with that knocked out of the way, let’s get on to the main body of this post.
First of all, I’d like to inform you about severe weather day, and the weather expected therein. On Monday, I said that the weather on Thursday April 3 (dubbed by me as severe weather day) was going to be severe; large hail, damaging winds, and isolated tornadoes. The forecast really hasn’t changed much, except that the storms are now most likely to hit mid to late morning, and the main severe weather threat is going to be east of where I live. So, hopefully, we will not be seeing any tornadoes in the near future.
On to life news, school has been boring (more than usual), because of staar testing. Basically, on both yesterday and today, I sat at a table for 5 hours, completing tests that were (no exaggeration), at least 60 questions. Not to mention, the English test which I took today, had like 6 stories in it. My goodness, state of Texas, why must you burden me with such horrendous and pointless work? I am a natural born relaxationist (don’t ask me if that’s a word, because I honestly don’t know)… so all that work was too much for me.
Anyway, besides school, I still haven’t programmed since last week… except maybe a bit on Sunday out of pure bordem. I plan to talk to my dad, and try to reason with him that my intentions aren’t to sell my software as of yet, but to release them as first programs. And if he thinks someone can steel it from me, (I think this is the case), I’ll need to let him know that I’m releasing this software as an executable, and not open source code, thus no one can modify the windows that are titled “trash by sQuad software” and “sQuad word.” because after all, despite my endless excited ranting about programming in the past months and years, he just told me last Thursday, after I’d spent 2 months of hard stressful work on 2 projects with quite a bit of potential. In fact, oddly enough, today marks exactly one month since I first began writing the code for Trash, and this Sunday will not only mark 2 months since the first lines of sQuad word were written, but also the day I began actually learning programming. So do you see where I’m coming from?
Moving on, I also have some news about the podcast. I know I said I couldn’t schedule episodes to the date, as we all know how that was going, but I can tell you the game of the day for the next few episodes… in case you’re interested. For episodes 20 and 21, I will continue my swamping with Steve series, and for episode 20 the campaign I’ll be playing is one called “twisted egg hunt.” It’s like an egg hunt, but there are also zombies; so not only do you have to find as many eggs as is possible in the allotted time period, but you also have to avoid having your brains eaten by zombies. Good times, good times.
Aside from that, episode 22 will have a review of the remarkable game my friend Danny is working on, the first of its kind. It’s called snow race, and is an accessible, multi player snowboarding game for the blind. I highly recommend you go to his website (the link will be at the bottom of the post) to check it out, because it’s a truly awesome game. So I guess you’d better look forward to episode 22, because that’s when snow race will be demonstrated.
That’s about it for podcast game of the days, but I’ll get some more games to test in later episodes. And while on the subject of podcasts, I can see a few of you’ve listened to episode 19? That is, after all, the most clicked link on my website in the last 3 days. Well I’m just glad you enjoy it.

Completely changing topics, let’s discuss my future for a while. This weekend, I don’t know what I’ll do as of yet, except goal ball. It seems like a while since I’ve gone to goal ball, though it’s probably only been two weeks. Also in my near future, I have a orchestra concert coming up on April 15 (we’re playing some good songs, but not the best songs we’ve learned. I think the songs we’re playing are songs we learned about 2 weeks ago). But for our orchestra concert on May 29, we’re playing some pretty awesome songs, so good that I’ve officially declared them “my jams.”
Also, we’re having a choir concert, however I don’t know exactly when that is. But for that, we’re singing “black burd” by the Beatles, and just the way you are by Bruno Mars.
Anyway, continuing with future events, on April 6 it will officially be 2 months until the last day of school. Also, there are only 7 more Monday’s left of school, but that’s not counting memorial day, which of course we have off.

Spring has arrived

Did you know today is the first day of Spring? Yes, we all made it through that cold; harsh winter of 2013 and 2014.
Call me negative, call me paranoid… but there’s one main thing that comes to mind when I think about spring–tornadoes. Tornadoes are probably my biggest fear, thus the fact that we’re entering a 2-3 month period where they are possible, if not likely to happen, is a bit disconcerting to me.
As a more posative thought, spring also means my birthday, as well as the blog’s birthday. It also means that there are no more seasons separating us from summer break; I don’t know if this has occurred to you before, but summer break starts on June 6, and it’s not even summer officially until June 21. And on a completely unrelated note, I can also get some storm recordings now. Since thunderstorms tend to occur during the spring more than any other time, and the ones that happen during spring are the most epic ones, I’m bound to get some rather nice recordings… and expect them to be in stereo.
Aside from it being spring and all, I have some exciting news, along with upcoming events. Trash is going very well–not only have I completed the computer draw from junk pile procedure, but I have even done a win round procedure. (see the post on March 6 if you have no idea what trash is or when I started programming it). If progress keeps going how it’s going now, I expect a testers version out (not to you, to my friend), by Steve eve or the day of the best. (the day of the best being a reference to my birthday, because I’m so narcissistic like that).
As for sQuad word, (used to be ultra pad until I quit collaboration with Mason), I’m still fixing visual stuff. Since I only see my friend from school… well… at school, testing that is going slow. I get him to look at it, come home and try to fix it, and get him to look at the next day… etc etc. I’m going to look at a notepad example either tonight or tomorrow and see how they visually did theirs, and copy that for mine. (I won’t copy any code, just the x and y positions, and the width and height of the edit box where you type all your text). Anyway, if I can do that, and my friend tests it and says it looks good, I’ll get it out to you tomorrow or this weekend, and if not, next week. Remember, that when I publish it, you’ll know because the software page will be renamed to “sQuad software.”
Besides software and such, let me give you a brief, and I mean really brief this time, life update.
You know the zombie book I was reading, (it was called “Feed, newsflesh trilogy #1” in case you don’t remember (it was also mentioned on March 6th’s post))? well by golly I finally finished it. Sure it was 2 and a half weeks after I got it, but I! finished it! Not that it’s exciting (it was a good book), but it took me forever to finish that. It must have been 600 pages.
Well As you know with all trilogies, they have 3 books. So, I’m now reading “Deadline, newsflesh trilogy #2.” It’s turning out to be good so far.
Besides all that reading, I haven’t been doing much. Literally, for this whole school week, my evenings were spent on Skype with Danny, and programming. But how can you blame me? Danny is my closest friend, granted we don’t see each other, and programming is one of my hobbies, and hopefully future career. And hey, if those colleges see I want to program, and have done it for several years already, they’ll have no problems letting me in… right? :))
Looking ahead to the future, it’s almost my birthday. A day that, if you like this blog, you’ll be as happy as I’ll be–isn’t it true that if I was never born, nor would this blog be? And of course, don’t forget the upcoming birthday of the blog.
And on a final note, speaking of the blog, we’re almost at 10000 views–and I won’t say the usual “keep viewing and I’ll keep posting” line again, since that really makes me sound like I’m posting for the views; something I am not doing.

good and bad news, along with current life events

Yes, you read that right. Today is one of the rare occurrences of bad news on this blog… so I guess I’ll tell you the bad news right now just to get it out of the way.
You know Swamp? The game I’ve been addicted to for about a year now? Well due to the fact that there are so many hackers, attacks, and other unwanted things happening within the game, Aprone (swamp’s creator) is making it a paid game. I won’t have to pay for single player, but if I want multiplayer, that’ll be $24 per year.
I have a visa gift card, so hopefully that will work. If so, I might consider paying for swamp. But if not… well I’d better step up my game (quite literally) and program some audio games worth selling.
Speaking of audio games, the good news I mentioned earlier is about Trash, the card game that I am programming for the blind. let me tell you how much progress I’ve done on that.
-I completed the player system, testing it out to be sure it works. Now, you can draw, place cards at the desired position, junk, and draw from the junk pile.
-mostly completed the computer player system. The only thing I need to do for the computer player system is to add the draw from junk pile procedure, but I figure that’ll be easy.
-began the process of adding sounds. I’ve already added a deck shuffling sound for when you start the game and the deck is shuffled, but I don’t think I’ll add any more sounds until I’m completely done with all the other stuff.
Speaking of sounds, I found my flash drive of sounds, which I believe contains over 1000 sound affects. That’s good news for future games.
Moving on to my life, we’re well into spring break now. To start off the break, my friend Oscar from church came over to spend the night. It was another surprise my parents threw at me–one minute I was on the computer, chatting with Danny over skype, the next I was scrambling to clean my room and the bathroom so they didn’t look like a complete mess when Oscar came.
And three hours later, my mom and I picked up Oscar, and him and I spent the rest of the night playing wii, and hanging out.
On Saturday, I had goal ball practice, however Libby didn’t go because she went to the mall with the church youth group to ice skate (yet another event that I was going to, but didn’t figure that out until after my last update, I think). Anyway, Oscar came to goal ball as well, so he got to see my awesome skill!
Right after goal ball, Oscar, my dad, and I met up with Libby and the rest of the youth group at the mall, where I attempted, but failed, at ice skating. But hey, It’s not really about how good I was, it was about hanging with friends, (at least that’s what I hope). But seriously, even though I was ice skating along the wall, I still managed to slip 3 or 4 times, but luckily I didn’t fall.
Skipping ahead, after ice skating, we all went to in and out burger for lunch, before heading our separate ways and going home. Oscar got to hang out with me for a few more hours–and for dinner, 2 hours after we ate lunch, we had more burgers and fries. But hey, there’s no such thing as too many burgers or fries in my book :).
After Oscar left, my Saturday night went a little something like this. Lay on the couch, watching from the side lines as the rest of my family played Yahtzee on the wii, as my head pounded and throbbed, feeling as though someone knocked it with a baseball bat or something. I’m not sure why my head hurt so bad, but luckily it was gone in about 2 hours.
Besides church, Sunday was uneventful. And as for Monday, the only thing I did outside the house was go out for lunch with my sister, mom, and dad. And today, besides a lot of programming, I didn’t do much of anything.
But aside from getting out of the house, my last 3 days have been filled with Skyping my friends, and playing my games, all day, and until 2 or 3 in the morning.
Ah. Isn’t it fun to be a teenager?
Anyway, that’s about it for today’s post. I know you’re sad because you don’t get to read any more of my words at the moment, but you could always:

An exciting end to a long blogging break

Woe! It’s already been almost 3 weeks since my last blog update. I mean the only evidence that I still exist (to you guys anyway) is my Monday’s Musings posts, but even those get scheduled sometimes if something bugs me enough on another week day. Don’t worry, this will not be an often occurance–even I need a break from the blog for a while. I think my break is over, so expect more life updates in the future.
As is with all way overdue life updates, I have a lot of stufff to tell you about. First, let’s start with d now, since it was the first thing that happened after my blog post.
As all d nows are, this one was quite enjoyable. On Friday afternoon (valentines day), I only had time to go home, pack, eat some candy, before leaving to go to the host home (the home I would be staying at for the weekend). Basically, the host homes were divided by gender and grade level, so the 6th grade boys would be in one, the 6th grade girls in another, and it would be that way for all the grade levels from 6 to 12. Anyways, shortly after arriving at the host home, getting to know the people I would be staying with, we all went to the church, where we had fajitas for dinner, and then played a getting to know game.
The rest of our Friday night consisted of worship and church service, going back to the host home, small groups discussion (a time to discuss what we learned from the service, but that ended up being small groups comity because I kept telling jokes and making people laugh), snack, and then just chill time until it was time to go to bed.
On Saturday morning, we awoke to a breakfast of breakfast tacos, before having quiet time (a time to study the bible). Then, we headed to the church where we had another worship service, lunch, and finally our mission project. A mission project is when we go out and do work, and it’s separated into host homes as well. Our group had to go and pick up trash (I forget where we went).
After the mission project, instead of a scavenger hunt, we did random acts of kindness. In that game, each group would drive around doing random acts of kindness for people, and taking pictures of it. I believe that the winner would be the group with the most pictures.
Finally, it was time for dinner, and then my friend Joseph and I spent the free time after dinner reading the bible.
After another church service Saturday night, we had small groups discussion once again, but I was more serious this time. Then, Joseph and I read the bible some more until bed.
On Sunday morning, we had another quiet time, before going to the church to have breakfast, a Sunday school service which ended up being people telling about their experiences from the weekend, and then a final worship service. After that it was time to go home.
Although I didn’t want to go home, I had a wonderful time at D Now. It was a great time for me to connect with friends, and get closer to god. I really look forward to going next year.
Now that you know about d Now, let me tell you about sQuad word. On Sunday, I found out that my friend Mason was also making a word pad. He had some stuff in his word pad that I didn’t know how to do, and I had stuff in my notepad that he didn’t know how to do. So, we decided to colaborate, combining our word pads to create ultrapad. Thus, sQuad word is now known as ultrapad, and is just about ready for release, except one small bug that is easily fixable. I don’t have a definant release date at this time.
As for my last 3 weeks, not much has happened, that being one of the reasons I haven’t blogged in a while. This weekend though, my family and I went up to my papa and nana’s lake house, and spent yesterday and last night there, because my dad had to help Papa with something.
Also, there is a winter storm warning in affect. It’s in the 20’s right now, sleeting, and the temperatures are still falling. This is really hard to believe considering it was in the upper 70’ss 24 hours ago.
On a final note, I have a few events to tell you about.
For one, it’s Steven D awareness month. Yes, I’m so awesome, I named this month after myself, so everyone could be aware of my awesomeness. 🙂
Also, Steve eve, and my birthday are coming up. Steve eve is the day before my birthday. Steve eve is on March 25, and my birthday is March 26.
And finally, on April 21, this blog will turn 3 years old, thus meaning I will have been blogging for 3 years!
On a last note, this blog is almost up to 10000 views (9,755 at the moment). Pretty cool… huh?

getting back into it

Few, that break went by fast… and here we are already half way done with the first school week of 2014… hard to believe, huh? I am going to get back into the swing of things (both in blogging, and school), seeing as how I haven’t produced a life update post in over a week now.
to tell you the truth, Newyears day was pretty much the only day I did anything in the last 4 or 5 days of Christmas break. On Wednesday (new years day), my mom, sister, and I went and saw MRs. Dawn again, and since she lives about 2 hours away, it took up our whole day. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday were uneventful, however we all went to church on Sunday. As for Monday, that was the last chance I got to chill before… you guessed it… school. You know how I’ve been talking about playing swamp over the break? Well I didn’t realise this, but I spent in total 76 hours on swamp between Christmas day and January 6th. Yes, I actually spent the equivalent to 3 days and 3 nights streight on swamp, thuse only 14 of my 17 days weren’t spent on the game… talk about adicting games!
Back to my life, Tuesday was of course the start of school, and that is pretty much all I did Tuesday and yesterday, mainly because I was very tired after school and so I didn’t feel like doing anything else.
Also while on the subject of school, I can forget sleeping in until 7 on school mornings. My mom and dad switched schedules and job positions, so now I will have to start riding the bus to school in the morning. What does this mean for my sleep schedule? It means that from now on, I will have to get up at 5:45 on every school morning except Monday! On a posative note, mom and dad will be home every night (except I think Dad goes out of town on Monday nights so all except that night), and both will always be home on the weekends, so we get more family time.
On other news, unbelievably, something that would not normally be a good idea actually turned out to possibly save me a whole bunch of work. You know Stranded? well one day I decided that I wanted to take it to school with me and work on it when there was no work left for me to do in class, and so I put it on a flash drive. I believe that Stranded is still on that flash drive… but there is still the possibility that I deleted it. If I did, I will have to restart on the project… but if I don’t, I am looking at February 1 as a possible release date.
On the podcasting side of things, I didn’t do the podcast on Saturday because I was too lazy to create a campaign for swamping with Steve part ii. Fortunately, I created that campaign, and will be doing the podcast within the next couple days… after I come up with an intresting segment and tech tip to put in… and even that I’m starting to come up with ideas for.
On a final note, since school has started and there will be more going on, expect more frequent blog updates. I don’t update often during breaks, since I often take advantage of that time to relax and do absolutely nothing.

Monday updates

Okay so I’m finally going to blog. I’m not going to put it off until later, as I’ve been doing since yesterday. I thought “Hmm, I’ll just blog Sunday night,” and when that didn’t happen I thought I’d do it this morning. Well I’m not going to tell you all the times I said I’d blog and didn’t, so let’s just be happy I’m finally at it.
The weather has been cool and rainy today, as is expected tomorrow and Wednesday. For some reason, I made the mistake of wearing shorts in today’s weather, as I did last week when it was forty five degrees.

Wow, I can’t believe I just did that. Who puts hash tags on a blog?
Me that’s who.
Well let me get back to my blog update.
Also, the time change happened yesterday. It totally caught me off guard. The only thing that made me even realize that the time had changed in the first place was when I listened to the weather report and the time it gave was an hour behind my watch. One thing I really like about the daylight savings to standard time change is the fact that when I have to get up at 7:00 for school, my body actually thinks it’s 8. Since I usually get up at 8 or after on the weekends anyway, I was very refreshed and ready to go when I got up this morning.
Now, on to a very bizarre thing that happened yesterday morning. For some reason, both my mom and I had close to the same dream; both dreams had my cat Trashua dieing. Mine was that my mom and dad tricked me in to believing that Trashua was dead (they kept that up for three days). My mom’s dream was the more creepy one however. In her’s, Trashua actually died, but that’s not even the scarry part.
Our family (me, my mom and dad, I don’t think Libby was in that dream) went to this place where there were a lot of kittens. Of course I was beyond distraught; I had just lost my beloved cat and all. Well, for some reason, every time I’d go to leave that place, this orange cat with no tail would do a long meow and run towards me. Why is this creepy you ask? Well because Trashua is orange and has no tail… that’s why. So yeah I was pretty spooked after that one.
On to less scary and more happy things, we had the family get together yesterday. Everyone ended up staying until about 10:30. The thing was a blast, mainly since I got to pig out on mexican food all night and enjoy the company of my family. We also played the game catch phrase, but I ended up falling asleep because I got bored and was already tired in the first place.
Today, as I mentioned at the beginning of the post, today has been one of those rainy days. My o&m teacher, (orientation and mobility teacher) let me get a little (by that I mean large) double chocolate chip frappuccino from star bucks. I don’t know why I had to drink that so fast; I got 5 freaking brain freezes in about 10 minutes… but it was worth it.
Tomorrow and Wednesday, I have to go to school early in the morning (7:40) for orchestra rehearsals, because as you know I have a concert coming up on Thursday.
Well with that being said, I don’t have much more to say about life events. I will not even comment about the podcast, because I’ve ran out of excuses. 🙂
I will be able to get that done tomorrow or Wednesday, but Devin will not be in the casts since he’s at the school for the blind this week.
